This ancient monastery complex dates back to the 7th century and is built on the site of a former prison where Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for 13 years. The name "Khor Virap" means "deep dungeon" in Armenian, and visitors can actually descend into the very pit where the saint was held. The monastery's hilltop location provides absolutely breathtaking panoramic views of the majestic mountain, especially at sunrise and sunset when the light creates magical effects on the snow-capped peaks.
